Abstract

Several putative neurotransmitter amino acids and monoamime metabolites were measured in the cerebrospinal fluid of spontaneously photosensitive baboons ( Papio papio) at different periods witvarying degrees of photosensitivity in the same animals. At maximum photosensitivity the inhibitory amino acids γ-aminobutyric acid and taurine were lower, and those of asparagine (metabolite of the excitatory amino acid aspartate) were higher, than when the animals were not photosensitive. Thus a decreased inhibition and perhaps increased excitation correlates witthe level of photosensitivity.
