Abstract
In the last 70 years there have been over 200 papers published on tumours of the C. N. S. in domestic animals, and most authors stress the rarity of such tumours. However, on the basis of our own experience and that reported in recent publications (Frauchiger and Fankhauser, 1957; Dahme and Schiefer, 1960; McGrath, 1960; Smit, 1961), we have formed the opinion that these tumours occur in the dog with a frequency and variety similar to that in man. The entire literature in this field fails to give a complete picture of the frequency, morphology and characteristics of C. N. S. tumours of animals. This can be explained by the paucity of any large series of cases (most articles being single case reports), the difficulty of interpretation of the histology of many tumours, and the absence of standardized nomenclature.
