Abstract

Childhood-onset disabilities are a group of congenital or acquired chronic conditions that originate during pregnancy or infancy, and comprise impairments in physical, intellectual, and/or behavioral function. Worldwide, these disabilities are some of the most common lifetime medical conditions (eg, prevalence of cerebral palsy [CP] is roughly 3 per 1000 live births). Evidence demonstrates that the number of adults who live with CP and other childhood-onset disabilities is increasing, and that they experience significant physical and mental health inequalities as they grow up.
