Abstract

This book discusses a variety of metabolic encephalopathies that may be reflected by changes in cerebral energy metabolism. Whether the primary alteration in energy metabolism results from a direct action on the metabolic pathways of energy production or is mediated indirectly by, for example, abnormal neurotransmitter action, is unknown in most cases. Nevertheless, an appreciation of modern concepts of cerebral energy metabolism is fundamental to a thorough understanding of these disorders. Certainly it is clear that cerebral function and energy metabolism are closely linked; knowledge of the rate of energy utilization can yield valuable insight into cerebral function both at the level of the whole brain and individual structures. Many new concepts regarding energy metabolism as well as new methods of study have emerged in the last decade. The purpose of this chapter is to review some of these with emphasis on those aspects that may facilitate better understanding of the etiology of altered states of consciousness or function.
