Abstract

One of the etiologies of stroke, especially in younger patients, is patent foramen ovale (PFO). The aim of this study is distribution of brain emboli in patients with PFO. We injected 99mTc-macroaggragated albumin (MAA) in 51 patients, while accomplishing valsalva maneuver, then they underwent brain scintigraphy. The most intensity of MAA uptake was respectively in cerebellar, occipital, frontal and temporoparietal regions. The study demonstrated that posterior circulation is dominant region of brain involve by cardiac emboli in subjects with PFO.
