Abstract
Consideration is given the procedures, utility, and problems of ceramic classification used in Middle Mis souri prehistory. A review of the development of the ware-type concepts and theoretical approaches to ceramic typologies are provided. Special attention is given the problems inherent in most of the ware and type definitions in the literature. An evaluation is made of the extant reports which use ceramics in unique or different ways, and suggestions are provided con cerning potential productive analytical procedures.
