Abstract

Ten species of Cerambycidae were collected from cultivars of sunflower, Helianthus annuus L., but only Mecas inornata Say, Ataxia hubbardi Fisher, and Dectes texanus LeConte are serious pests in the Rolling Plains and High Plains areas of Texas, and only M. saturnina LeConte and D. texanus attack sunflower in central and south Texas. Mecas inornata and M. saturnina were the most destructive of the girdling insects that attack sunflower. They destroyed as much as 20 to 62%, respectively, of plants in isolated areas. Also, M. inornata was observed to do considerable damage to wild H. annuus and to attack H. mollis Lambert, H. tuberosus L., H. salicifolius Dietr., and H. maximiliani Schrader in the Rolling Plains. Dectes texanus texanus LeConte attacked sunflower in the Rolling Plains southward, D. texan us alticola Casey was found on the High Plains of Texas, and D. texanus murinus Dillon was found in extreme West Texas. Distributional and alternate host records were made for the 10 species.
