Abstract More than 15 band features observed in spectra of the pure S star R Cyg near minimum light are tentatively identified with the CeO molecule. Laboratory spectra of CeO are described, and good correspondences are indicated between the stellar and laboratory spectra in the wavelength region from 4790 to 4930 A. It is noted that several moderately strong laboratory CeO bands were not observed in the stellar spectrum and that none of the bands tentatively identified with CeO is observed in spectra of carbon or M stars of approximately the same temperature. Molecular dissociation equilibrium calculations are shown to support the identification of CeO in spectra of S stars. It is concluded that Ce, whose most abundant stable isotope is an s-process element, could be overabundant in R Cyg.
