Abstract

Supraoesophageal ganglion metaphases of Chironomus tentans larvae exhibit seven apparent metacentric chromosomes instead of the six metacentrics and two acrocentrics expected (n = 4). This is explicable by the fourth chromosome pair pairing in the centromere region. There is also a small percentage of cells with an apparent haploid set of larger chromosomes. The evidence suggests that these cells are diploid with the chromosomes paired at the centromere region.
