Abstract

A force transducer can easily be made by attaching a strain gauge to a metal cantilever and applying a force F to the free end (Kuhl). A mass m fastened to the free end of this cantilever makes an accelerometer. This can be mounted on a turntable at a radius R to provide a convincing demonstration of the centripetal force relationship F=m nu 2/R=mR omega 2 where nu is the tangential velocity and omega is the angular velocity.
