Abstract

The removal of the centre-of-mass motion is studied in the two-centre harmonic oscillator shell model with different characteristic lengths. In order to perform the calculations, two approaches are proposed and discussed. The first one brings to light a relation between the one- and two-center harmonic oscillator models, while the other one is connected with the generator coordinate method. The weight functions required in both cases are particularized to gaussian functions. Their width parameter is allowed to take negative values in order to reach an arbitrary gaussian relative function. Usual projection methods which are peculiar cases of ours are compared to each other. Numerical calculations for theα−t andα-α systems illustrate the tractability of the methods.
