Abstract

What a year and a half this has been! Who among us at the beginning of March 2020 could have imagined what was ahead and how our world and lives were going to change—in some respects, permanently. But thanks to the biomedical research community and unprecedented miracle of modern medicine with the development and distribution of the COVID vaccines, here we are for one of the first in-person surgical society scientific meeting since COVID hit. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my career to serve as your president this year, and, at the outset, I want to acknowledge so many individuals who have made this year one of the highlights of my professional career.
