Abstract
In the framework of the random-phase approximation it is possible to give the explicit dependence of the shell model Hamiltonian on the c.m. degrees of freedom. The smallness of the terms in this Hamiltonian which couple the c.m. to the internal degrees of freedom can be examined in every case. It was found, that for commonly used potential wells the coupling is rather small and an approximate separation is possible. The method described here can be generalized and used for the separation of other collective degrees of freedom.
