Abstract

A position alarm system was designed, developed, and evaluated for use on a single tower, center-pivot irrigation system. The alarm system signals the operator when the pivot boom reaches an established position. The position of the pivot boom and tower can be determined within 0.62° when the direction of rotation is reversed (clockwise and counter-clockwise travel) and within 0.03° when rotating in the same direction. With modification, this low-cost system may be used to automate a center-pivot system to stop, change direction or velocity, or perform other functions at preset positions.
