Abstract

The Center for Character and Leadership Development (CCLD) on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy is a distinctive new landmark which remains true to the significant architectural history of the Academy. Upon completion, the CCLD will provide the Air Force Academy with new classrooms, offices, assembly space and an iconic 105- tall skylight. The design of the skylight is a true reflection of the integrated multi-disciplinary approach that resulted in a form that responds to the demands of its surrounding environment as well as optimizes the use of structural materials. The architecturally exposed structural steel skylight is devoid of any embellishments and its sleek connections are coherent with the dynamic aesthetics of the structure. The final design of the structure and its various components ensured that it could be easily constructed.
