Abstract

The “Pentagon Papers” amply demonstrate that the American public didn't get very much of the background of our involvement in Southeast Asia. Recent books and other writings attempt to show that we didn't get much of the foreground, either. But what of American servicemen in Vietnam, supposedly receiving all the news they need from the Armed Forces Vietnam Network? The extent to which this information was censored for political reasons is explored in the following article. Charles Moore presently is a graduate student and teaching assistant in the Department of Mass Communications of Texas Tech University. He recently retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of major, having served the last five years in the Army Information Officers Program. He was stationed in Vietnam in 1968, where he worked closely with MACOI and AFVN.
