Abstract

Abstract Re-examination of the costellate and spinose Cenozoic rhynchonellide genus Tegulorhynchia has reduced the number of valid species from 11 to 6; the status of two species is uncertain. Tegulorhynchia depressa (Thomson) and T masoni Allan are placed in synonymy with Tegulorhynchia squamosa (Hutton), the type species. T. squamosa is present in rocks of Eocene to Miocene age in New Zealand, including Chatham Islands. The only other New Zealand species, T. sublaevis (Thomson), formerly placed in Notosaria, occurs at a single Oligocene locality near Oamaru. The status of the fossil and Recent T. doederleini (Davidson) and fossil species from Australia and Antarctica is discussed.
