Abstract
Foundry sands from bronze and brass foundries are often classified as a hazardous waste due to the presence of lead. Disposal of foundry sands as a hazardous waste can cost over $150 per ton. By mixing foundry sands with cement, a nonhazardous concrete can be formed, thereby greatly reducing the cost of disposal. Cement to foundry sand mixture ratios (by weight) of between 1:3 and 1:8 were found to be effective for rendering the sands nonhazardous, based upon the EP toxicity test for lead.
