Abstract

• Thermally insulating, light-reflecting cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) aerogel enables daytime cooling in sunlight and humidity. • Aerogel is fabricated from a CNC suspension with a crosslinking agent using a freeze-casting process. • Mechanically robust material consists of CNCs held together with silane crosslinks in a porous network. • Aerogel shows strong solar reflectance (96 % visible light), high emittance (92 %) in the mid-infrared region, and ultralow thermal conductivity.
