Abstract

ABSTRACTThe hemicellulose fraction of immature and mature Valencia orange peel was fractionally extracted and analyzed after removing the interfering polymeric materials consisting of proteins and large amounts of pectic substances. A procedure for the fractionation of the alcohol‐insoluble solids (AIS) is presented for citrus fruits, which may be used for other plant materials. The monosaccharide constituents of the hemi‐cellulose were determined after hydrolysis and paper chromatography. Comparisons of the pectic substances, protein, hemicellulose, and cellulose components were made between immature and mature Valencia orange peel.
