Abstract

A population of mammalian somatic cells in culture in most cases terminates its proliferation after a period of vigorous growth. Occasionally, either through the action of extraneous effectors or spontaneously, it becomes immortalized, resulting in a continuously growing cell population (Hayflick and Moorhead 1961; Todaro and Green 1963).
