Abstract

A new noise generator using Cellular Automata (CA) is presented in this paper. One- dimensional linear CA produce pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS) if they are exhaustive. Digital low-pass filtering of the PRBS results in analog Gaussian noise with a spectrum that extends up to 5% of the PRBS frequency. The generator has been implemented using off-the-shelf HCMOS components and allows noise generation in the bandwidth [0–1 MHz]. Digitally generated noise possesses several advantages such as known spectrum and amplitude with adjustable bandwidth. Experimental results using the proposed technique are also presented.
