Abstract

Cell motility is a highly dynamic process essential for morphogenesis, immune response, wound healing and cancer metastasis [1]. With the evolution to higher throughput cell migration assays and advanced image quantification strategies, the currently unmet challenge in the field lies in data management, data storage and streamlining data (meta)analysis [2,3]. We present CellMissy [4] (Cell Migration Invasion Storage System), an open source cross-platform data management system that simplifies and automates experimental design and annotation, data import and storage from image analysis, data quality control and visualization. The software is mainly composed of three modules: the Experiment Manager, Data Loader and Data Analyzer. On top of these, functionalities for exporting and importing XML set-up templates are available, together with means to export and directly re-import experiments by any CellMissy user, thus enabling data dissemination and re-analysis and reproduction of results. The extensive metadata annotation possible in CellMissy uniquely allows biologically relevant queries across the total body of data stored in the management system, pivotal for systems-level integrative biological research in the migration field.
