Abstract

Most of the peroxidase activities from cultured cells of Marchantia polymorpha L. were found in the cell wall. The activities increased markedly after the beginning of stationary growth. Cytochemical examination using an electron microscope indicated that the peroxidase was localized in the layers of the cell wall. The increase of peroxidase released from the cells into the culture medium was closely correlated with the increase of the peroxidase level in the cell wall. The release of peroxidase seemed to be caused by fragmentation of the cell wall stripped from cell.
