Abstract

AbstractIn hepato-pancreato-biliary disease treatment, pancreatic islet transplantation (PIT) is the most clinically successful cell transplantation. Allogeneic PIT can effectively treat patients with type 1 diabetes with intractable impaired awareness of hypoglycemia and severe hypoglycemic events. The indication of this treatment has been widely investigated through several clinical trials, and further development is expected. Patients with painful chronic pancreatitis undergoing total pancreatectomy may receive total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation to prevent surgical diabetes. This treatment has been increasingly applied; thus, evaluations of its indication and usefulness should be determined. In this chapter, we provide an outline on allogeneic and autologous PIT and introduce the refinement that might improve the clinical outcome.KeywordsAllogeneic pancreatic islet transplantationType 1 diabetesHypoglycemiaChronic pancreatitisTotal pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation
