Abstract

Serpulina hyodysenteriae is a Gram-negative, anaerobic, oxygen-tolerant spirochete recognized as the etiologic agent of swine dysentery. Currently 9 serotypes/serogroups of S. hyodysenteriae are recognized on the basis of antigenicity of cell wall lipooligosaccharide antigens. Characteristics that distinguish S. hyodysenteriae from other intestinal spirochetes of swine include strong hemolytic activity and enteropathogenicity for swine, mice, guinea pigs and chicks.KeywordsToxic ActivityCell Free SupernatantCell Membrane PermeabilityAmerican Veterinary Medical AssociationPeripheral Blood LymphoThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
