Abstract

Cell loss in ATM transport appears to be a critical factor affecting the quality of a video signal. The loss of a single cell can cause a synchronization failure in the decoding process, which in turn can lead to objectionable degradation in picture quality. In this paper, we investigate issues in applying error correction coding to variable bit rate video signals. We use a block interleaving scheme based on Reed-Solomon codes and describe an algorithm for detecting and locating lost cells. Results indicate that with a bit error rate of 10-9, we could allow a network cell loss rate of up to 10-4 without exceeding an effective cell loss rate (after correction) of 10-10.
