Abstract

The author, an economist and former commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), looks at the history of the U.S. Department of Labor, focusing on its role of providing accurate statistics about the U.S. economy and labor market. She outlines the creation of the department and of the BLS, citing its first commissioner, Carroll Wright. She discusses the BLS's effort to ensure its statistics are developed in a manner that is objective and free of political influence.
