Abstract
IN APRIL, THE National Kidney Foundation held the 2011 Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas, NV, which was a great success for the Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN). In total, there were nearly 3,100 participants, with 450 of them being dietitians! As a group, we were at the second position in attendance after the physicians. The CRN program offered 34.75 continuing education units surrounding the latest research related to management of the chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. A wide variety of topics were included in this year’s program. They included malnutrition, inflammation, appetite regulation, weight loss interventions inCKDpatients, pharmacotherapy forweight loss, pediatricwellness, micronutrients, patient education, alternative medicine and botanical nutrition therapy, oral health in renal disease, diabetes, motivational interviewing, peritoneal dialysis kinetics and nutrition, patient perspectives, cooking demonstrations, strategies for patient adherence, mechanisms of salt-sensitive hypertension, vitamin D3, hidden additives in the food supply, alternative modalities, bundling, probiotics, nutrigenomics, and research statistics. Our preconference session, Strategies 2 Advanced Practice in Renal Nutrition: Update 2011 sold out and was closed 1 week before the conference. The Roundtable session also sold out. Thus, both the sessions have been enlarged for our meetings in 2012 to accommodate more interested participants. Additionally, our preconference session, Strategies 1 Foundations of Practice in Kidney Disease was also well attended by nearly 50 participants who partook in sessions reviewing the essentials of nutrition in the population with CKD. The CRN luncheon provided time for us to network as well as learn. Our keynote speaker
