Abstract
AbstractIn a comparative double—blind trial patients with ruptured membranes prior to cesarean delivery were randomly assigned to prophylaxis with either a single 1-g dose of ceforanide or three 2-g doses of cefoxitin. Three (5%) of 59 patients treated with ceforanide developed operative site infections, as did 6 (21%) of 28 patients who received cefoxitin. None of the patients had non—operative site infections. One patient in each group experienced minor drug-related adverse effects. Both drugs were effective in preventing post—cesarean infections. The convenience of a single 1-g dose of ceforanide and the potential cost savings achievable with its use are factors that favor choosing ceforanide for cesarean section prophylaxis.
