Abstract

Cefoperazone is a new parenteral antibiotic with a broad spectrum and pharmacokinetic properties which make it attractive for use in infections requiring surgery. A total of 41 patients were treated with 2 g of cefoperazone administered by the intravenous route at 12 hour intervals. 38 patients were treated for wound infections, peritonitis, perirectal abscesses and other soft tissue infections. Three patients received cefoperazone as a prophylaxis immediately after extensive intestinal surgery. All 37 patients (100%) who could be evaluated were found to have a satisfactory clinical response. In addition, cefoperazone eradicated 32 (59%) of the 54 pathogens isolated, which included gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Overall (global) effectiveness was judged excellent or good in 84% of the patients who could be evaluated clinically. The therapy was discontinued in three of the 41 patients due to side-effects; however, two of these were treated long enough to achieve a satisfactory clinical response. The clinical success achieved with cefoperazone is considered excellent.
