Abstract

A prototype of the multiwire drift chambers to be used in the high-momentum spectrometer (HMS) at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) has been designed and constructed. The prototype chamber has been tested recently in a 150-MeV pi /sup +/ beam with good results. The prototype chamber has 6 planes with a resolution per plane of about 94+or-11 mu m (sigma). This resolution is relatively constant up to 2 kHz wire/sup -1/ mm/sup -1/. The design of the full-sized HMS drift chambers has been finalized, based upon the work reported here. >
