Abstract
This article emphasizes the importance of the Constitution of Cádiz in America. The Hispanic Cortes, established in Cádiz, included the colonies as equals. This essay demonstrates that the people of America swore allegiance to the Charter as well as the Cortes’ decrees and that, moreover, the new political order was applied in the New World. The publication—a public ceremony—and application of the Constitution throughout the territories of the Spanish Monarchy was crucial for their subsequent development as liberal states after independence.
