Abstract

A prototype for a sector of an SVX (silicon vertex detector) was built and operated in the CDF test beam at M-test in Fermilab. The data taken in December 1987 and January 1988 with a 230 GeV/c pion beam are examined. The SVX prototype was operated with a custom CMOS VLSI chip in a test beam, and tracks were observed. The charge-sharing process in the detectors was studied and an optimal clustering and centroid finding algorithm was developed, which can be applied to the actual device. A position resolution of 8 mu m was measured, and good efficiency at a signal/noise of 12 was observed. >
