Abstract

Background and Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the trends in domestic and international research on AAC for parents over the past 10 years. Method: A total of 11 studies on AAC parental education conducted between 2014 and 2023 were selected, and the overall characteristics of the research and the parental education intervention and child intervention characteristics were analyzed. Results: Research on AAC parental education has recently increased, with dependent variables including not only the improvement in children's communication abilities and parental communication-prompting strategies but also parenting stress. The most commonly used strategies in parental education were oral explanations, guidance on intervention strategies, and role-playing and rehearsal. Printed materials were also used in many parental education programs. The intervention fidelity of parents in their children's communication was assessed in almost all studies and mainly focused on topics related to daily life in a home setting. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, AAC parental education needs to first expand the verification of AAC educational effects not only for parents but also for their children, and secondly, studies using various quantitative and qualitative research methods for AAC parental education research need to be expanded. Third, it is necessary to organize the content of parental education based on the individual characteristics and needs of the child.
