Abstract
This paper aims to deepen the understanding of the relation between the Portuguese letters of the 16th century and the “Latin auctoritates”, specifically as to the rhetorical and ethical appropriation and use of Cicero’s treatises of moral philosophy, translated by Duarte de Resende. Then, it places Cicero’s translations into perspective with other questions of his time, such as the topic of enhanced valuation of vernacular language, of padouan averroism and of diffusion of erasmist thought
