Bothun, G. D. ; Heckman, T. M. ; Schommer, R. A. ; Balick, B. Abstract The authors present the results of a survey for H I emission from a sample of 14 low-redshift (z < 0.07) QSOs and active galactic nuclei. In addition, they have obtained high-quality CCD images for most of the sample objects. Six of the 14 objects in the sample have been detected in H I, with a bias toward detecting objects that exhibited nebulosity on the Palomar Sky Survey. The range in detected H I mass is similar to that seen in previous studies of Seyfert galaxies. In general, neither active galactic nuclei or low-redshift QSOs are immersed in host galaxies that are overabundant in H I with respect to normal spirals. Furthermore, the optical luminosities of the host galaxies are not large in comparison with normal spirals. The most significant result is the strong H I detection of the QSO/Seyfert I galaxy IZw1 at a velocity that is within 50 km s-1 of the optical redshift.
