Abstract

Theoretical and experimental studies of cubic BN mixed with various metals and metal nitrides in the molar ratio 1:1 and 2:1 are reported. Theoretical calculations show that all investigated phases react with cubic BN forming new phases at 1400 and 1627°C. Experimental cBN-phase composites were prepared by high pressure hot pressing. Additionally, studies of the phase composition, morphology as well as of the mechanical properties of the superhard materials obtained have been carried out. Of all materials studied, composites containing a titanium binding phase show the best mechanical properties.
