Abstract

The first major variation to CAVH was continuous arteriovenous hemodialysis (CAVHD). In the adaptation for CAVHD, dialysate is added to the circuit to achieve a countercurrent flow to the blood path. By the mechanism of diffusion, improvement in solute and uremic toxin clearance was achieved. With the addition of the dialysate to the circuit, accommodations must be made in the calculation of filter replacement fluids. Institutional standards of care for CAVHD must be developed to complement those for CAVH.
