Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the causes of protein energy malnutrition as perceived by the mothers of affected children. A questionnaire was administered to the mothers of 28 children suffering from kwashiorkor and marasmus asking them the names given to the disease causes of the disease and traditional methods of treatment. The study took place in Nigeria in 1977. Various names were given to the disease by the mothers in their native dialects and many ascribed supernatural causes. None of the mothers mentioned inadequacy of diet as a cause of the diseases. Knowing the peoples beliefs about a disease is an important factor in devising successful nutrition education.
