Abstract

Summary
The causes of perinatal deaths in Uganda Africans were studied in a series of 102 necropsies at Mulago Hospital, Kampala. Major congenital defects seem to be relatively uncommon as a cause of death compared with other populations. No congenital heart disease was seen, and only one case of anencephaly and one of spina bifida. Birth trauma is a common cause of perinatal death and is often associated with prolonged labor. Craniotomy was necessary in 6 cases, and death was associated with rupture of the uterus in 3. This is the first such study in an indigenous African population.
