Abstract

Objectives To explore the causes of Extracorporeal Shock Wave lithotrips (ESWL)failure for ureteral calculi and the methods of dealingwith. Methods Analysis was made on 25 cases of ureteral calculi failure with ESWL. Results In the 25 cases, laparoscopic ureterolithotomy was made in 6 cases, swiss lithoclast under ureteroscope was made in 16 cases,Another ESWL was made in 3 cases because of the failures of ureterocystoscope with holmium and then some smashed calculus were slided to the kiney. Ureterolithotomy or ureteroeystoscope with holmium revealed that adhesive ureterostenosis in 3, inflammatory ureteral polyp in 18 ,encapsulation of the calculi by granulation tissue in 4. Conclusions ESWL is a good way to treat ureteral calculi for its dependability, but it only can be used in indication. Laparoscopic ureterolithotomy is the best way for upper segment ureteral calculi and swiss lithoclast under ureteroscope is the best way for middle or lower segment ureteral calculi when ESWL fails.
