Abstract
Water hammer, or surge, is defined as the momentary increase in flow or pressure that passes lengthwise along a conduit. This article discusses the causes and effects of water hammer, methods of control, and the problem of air in pipelines and how to combat it. Methods of controlling water hammer include: controlled valves; flywheel or pump motor; standpipe; air vessel or surge tank; one‐way surge tank; reservoir of water; suction pipe; surge relief valve; nonreturn valve; and reversal of pump.
