Abstract

In Japan, CATV system penetration is still very low. At the end of last year, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) in Japan deregulated ACTs on broadcasts and telecommunications. Consequently, American BOCs and MSOs (Multiple System Operators) are aiming at the Japanese market to expand their business, together with Japanese CATV operators, trade companies, power companies and NCCs (new common carriers). NCCs (e.g. NTT, TTNET) have started to provide a fiber optic analogue transmission system using subcarrier multiplexing technology as a leased line service for CATV operators. NTT has also provided nationwide transmission systems for terrestrial TV broadcasting companies, which are connected with all facilities by fiber optic trunk lines.
