Abstract

AbstractThe Catalytic activity of polystyrene sulfonic acid (commercial cation exchange resin) has been investigated for the cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers. Styrene, α‐methylstyrene, and isobutyl vinyl ether polymerized in the presence of this cation exchange resin giving polymers with rather low molecular weights. The kinetic behaviour of polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether is similar to that observed in the sulfuric acid‐catalyzed polymerization of styrene, but a diffusion‐controlled mechanism is proposed for the propagation reaction. The resulting poly(isobutyl vinyl ether) has an isotactic structure.
