Abstract

AbstractThere are many and complex issues surrounding the formation of Catholic teachers (who work in Catholic schools) in England and Wales. At the surface level, formation is related to the historical attempts in England and Wales to educate and train Catholics to teach in Catholic schools. For very practical reasons, Catholic schools have always been highly reliant on non-Catholic teachers. As a result, there are two distinct strands to the formation of teachers in relation to English and Welsh Catholic schools. The first strand is the formation in relation to those teachers who are Catholic Christians. The second strand is in relation to the high proportion of teachers in Catholic schools who are not Catholic Christians.KeywordsFormationCatholic teacherCatholic education in England and WalesCatholic schools
