Abstract

The formation of bibenzyl in the reduction of benzyltrialkylammonium salts in acetonitrile is shown to depend upon the peculiar nature of the aluminium cathode surface which permits extremely high local concentrations of benzyl free radicals. On electrode materials free from insulating films these radicals are all further reduced with the formation of toluene.
