Abstract

Cathode layer characteristics were experimentally determined for a glow discharge in argon and nitrogen in a broad range of gas pressures. A normal glow discharge regime is observed only provided that the gas ionization takes place in the anode layer (on the right of the inflection point in the glow discharge initiation curve). Importance of using a correct method for the normal cathode voltage drop is emphasized.
