Abstract

The effects of cathinone (active principle of Khat), on in vivo and in vitro lipolysis in rats have been studied. In vivo cathinone induces lipolytic activity, which is inhibited by reserpinization. In isolated adipocytes cathinone is devoid of intrinsic activity but does inhibit norepinephrine-induced Free Fatty Acids (FFA) release and cyclic AMP (cAMP) accumulation. Indirect lipolytic action, similar to that of amphetamines, is discussed.
