Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between sports and their environment by categorizing sports based on the different level of control exerted over the environment. The four categories of sports environments include total control(sports that will not be affected by surrounding environment), partial control(sports that only with strict regulations of fields and courts but will be affected by climates), framed environmental conditions(sports that have specific restrictions of where to compete), and no control of the environment(sports that take place in natural environments where athletes have no control of environment and climates). This paper examines how each category impacts the players of the sports in terms of gameplay, injury potential, and fairness. Additionally, this paper describes the effects that sports events have on the environment, such as the damaging effects of pollution and noise pollution. Finally, the paper addresses potential solutions that will create a more sustainable relationship between sports and the environment.
